Other Interesting Whites/Roses

If you're part of the ABC crowd (Anything But Chardonnay) or just want to expand your selections a bit, this page is for you. Pinot Blancs, Viognier, and even a dry Muscat are among our winter winners this time of year. Take a look below for what may be a new, undiscovered hit for you!

2008 Swanson Napa Valley Pinot Grigio

A great job creating a dry, crisp, mouthwatering Pinot Grigio with almost no oak influence. In fact, like my new kitchen appliances, I'd say this saw mostly stainless steel. The acidity is crisp and lively, making the apple, citrus and wildflower flavors seem almost savory. Good white with today’s wide range of cuisine, both ethnic and local!

Like the schoolboy who got picked on till he learned martial arts and grew up fit, handsome, well-respected, and of course, ended up dating the prettiest girl in the class, this Colombard ain't your tired, boring, beat-up grape used to make the oceans upon oceans of jug wines on the lower rack of your grocery store... the kind with marketing names like "california chablis" and other misleading junk... but I digress. This is terrific, well-crafted, perfect-for-bocce games juice. Think of it like a Pinot Gris with a nice citrus and pear touch!

2009 Azur Sierra/Napa Rose of Syrah

Last year's 08' Azur Rose was an almost perfect California Rose if I'd ever had one. The only thing I'd knock it for was the higher % alcohol than what I'd hoped for. It was balanced for sure, and didn't appear hot, but it sure crept up fast, and made you careful with how much you drank.... something you never want to worry about with Rose on a hot day. This year, the wine tasted every bit as good as last year, with the exception of a fantastic 13 instead of 14 next to that ABV% sign. Way to go Julien! I don't know how you did it, but this has now become my favorite all-time Rose

2006 Sensorium Paso Robles Vognier

A delightful, playful white. Dressed in a multi-layered robe of peach, nectarines, white fig, nutmeg, almond, this Viognier was grown on the carefully tended Melanges du Rhone vineyard south east of Paso Robles in the 'Templeton Gap.' It's low yields, cool climate, expert management and limestone rich soils produced small grapes with intense flavors. Loads of richness as a Viognier should have, but much less than many of its counterparts!

2008 Relic The Sage California White

A note from Schatzi and Mike, proprietors and cool people of Relic: "Some may find a blend of Chardonnay and Rhone varietals a bit radical, but we think they are perfectly at home together, especially at vineyards like Alder Springs. What is great about this wine is that it combines the richness of Chardonnay, the complexity of Roussanne and Marsanne, with the apricot, flowers and lime of Viognier. Fermented and aged in 66% new French Oak barrels, this wine is not shy. But it is also not over-the-top. It has a laser beam of focused aromas in the nose, combined with a density and richness that is rare for a wine with such detailed flavors and aromas. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. 110 cases produced."
